Loving & serving God as wife, mother, author, editor, ...

In Memory of Wayne Riggie 1964-2005

Kelly's brother, Wayne, was diagnosed with Small Cell Lung Cancer Thanksgiving '04. As a result of his illness, he came to know the Lord, who saw fit to free him from his struggle and pain at 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, uniting the two of them forever.

His funeral service was beautiful. His courage, his commitment to excellence, his fun-loving spirit, and his heart to cheerfully serve others were so evident in the testimonies of his friends and family.

I will long remember the last time I was with him, 13 days before he breathed his last breath. His eyes were brighter and bluer than I ever remember, as tears gently crept down both of our faces. He knew the end was near. As I held his 40-year-old frail hand, I knew he was sad to leave friends and family, yet his eyes displayed a longing to be freed into the comforting arms of God.

I was very blessed to be able to speak to him on the phone just 5 hours before his death. He couldn't speak, but I was told he opened his eyes when I spoke, and nodded and smiled. I treasure that memory.

Those of us in his family have been fortunate to have had such a great example of his unconditional love and his challenge to us to love each other well. He will be deeply missed on this side of heaven.
